Proxy keeps requesting authentication

By bobrace ·
I can not figure out why I keep getting a message on my client that reads "your HTTP proxy requires user authentication. Please enter the appropriate user name and (nothing after this)

Proxy Address: (box)//proxy
User Name: (box) MyUsername
Password: (box) MyPassword

Then either OK or Cancel

Whether I click OK or Cancel, it doesn't matter, the message gos away and then comes back periodically. It does the same if I type in my Username and Password. How do I get this to go away?

Do you get to browse the site when the message goes away?

I'm guessing that you are using Internet Explorer 5.5 for the following procedures:

Tools
Internet Options
Security (tab)
Verify that Internet is highlighted
Clikc on Custom Level
Down at the bottom verify that User Authentication is checked where: "Automatic logon only in Intranet zone" and not "prompt for username and password"

Also under Miscellaneous --
Make sure that "Userdata persistence" is "enable"

You might want to repeat the process for Local Intranet, Trusted Sites and restricted sites.

---------
If that does not work, I'd be curious as to what site you are trying to visit and whether the administrators of your location are blocking certain sites at the firewall level -- maybe for non-work-related activities.

Something we have done here when enabling OWA. Before we enabled OWA we were getting three entry boxes, after we enabled OWA we had to remove NT Challenge and Response. After the fact, we only got two dialog boxes reading:
Realm or Firewall: Proxy Address
Username: entry box
Password: entry box
At this point under username you have to type:
Username: domainname/username
Password: user password
I'm not sure if this will solve you dillema, but it worked for us. Good luck!
