Proxy server requirements

By dennisbv ·
I want to add a computer that our company internet connection would connect to. It would have two nics and one would go to the router that connect to the internet and one would connect to our LAN. I want to run a different brand of Virus software(different than what we run on our net work)I may also want to run maybe Proxy server and our some type of intrution detecting. What would the requirements for this be, like OS (would windows 2000 pro?) what memory, Nics, Disk space?. I have put this question at higher point so I can accept multiple answers

OK, the machine would need to be able to handle a large volume of traffic (being a multihomed machine that directly connects to the internet), so two 100mb/s nics are needed. Windows 2000 server would be a better choice, since rras is only on server, however a 3rd prty util could suffice. There would need to be a fair amount of hdd, since it would cache all requests.

This machine would need to be a high level workstation machine, put simply.

For a small business unit and a somewhat nominal price per client[ try W2K Small Business Server. It comes with W2K Server with Active Directory, ISA Server, Exchange Server [also SQL server] all available to run on one box and is actually setup to run with an internal and external NIC configuration[a wizard in IIS handles the setup process and is very user friendly]. It can handle up to 50 clients on the LAN and with ISA Server, provides firewall protection, Doman Name,IP address packet filtering. Our company runs this on one box using an AMD XP1800 with 768 MB DDR memory, two 20 GB Quantum Fireball AS HHD in a mirrored array. We are setup with four different subnets and use a combination of switches and routers for the LAN. We also provide limited VPN Remote Access [limited to only 4 users at one time because of bandwidth constrains][ and two dial in users]. All in all we are quite pleased with this relatively inexpensive full service O/S.
