Proxy Server Workstation Configuration

By jkeav634 ·
MS Proxy Server 2.0 SP1 running on Windows NT Server SP6a(member server).Clients are Windows 2000/nt. What is the easiest way of configuring all the workstation internet explorer connection settings to point to the proxy server?(Internet Explorer v5-6). Login Script command? Is there a policy file? Thanks in advance.

I have used the IE admin kit. You can download a version of IE and set it up like you want, prevent your users from modifying your setup, then push your new install of IE with your modifications to your users at their next logon.

Set up a NT client to use the proxy server (open IE, click Tools -> Options -> Connections tab -> the Setup button to run the setup wizard. In the wizard, tell it to detect and use the proxy.
When done, export a portion of the Registry out:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings
Save this to a .REG file.
Then, put this REG file in your PDC Netlogon folder. Modify the logon scripts with this line:
call regedit /s YOUR_REGISTRY_FILE.REG

That is it. When the logon script runs, it will silently import the REG file, with the proxy server configurations.

One last thing: do the Registry export from a NT4 computer,NOT the Win2K machines. Registry export from Win2K do not import into NT4, but Win2kDOES support NT4 Registry files.

I did this myself at my office about 6 months ago. Worked like a charm!

Hope this helps.

One of the easiest way is to install on every workstation the proxy client, then you will see in the control panel an icon whit the name:
WSP client, if you double-click on it you will see the name of your proxy server.

You can disabled the client or enabled it, so let's say you have a couple of laptop in the network well those people would have to disabled it outside the office cause every application running on that pc will point to the proxy client and look for the proxy server listed there, such apps can be web browser or antivirus or even coppernic...

After installed it the only thing to do is to go I.E propreties\conection\lan settings ..select automatically detect settings and that about it....

If you made some custom settings whit your proxy you might have to check use proxy server and specify those settings... and for all other apps usually you select nothing or select connected directly to the internet and it's over....

you will find ms proxy client 2.0 in your backoffice cd...

good luck..
