PS3-Region Free?

I read some old articles saying that PS3 would be region free for games. Is it true now? I live here in Japan but im not a Japanese so I can’t read Japanese. And I like many american or english version of games. If PS3 is region free then I can buy my console here and just buy english games through ebay. So, does anyone really know (or tried) if PS3 is region free? Thanks folks!
