Public Domain Software

By jknapik ·
How do I ensure that software advertized as free is legal?

Several Ways

by TheChas In reply to Public Domain Software

First off, if the software references the GNU public license it is open source and free for nearly any use.

Second if the owner of the web site produced the software themselves and offers it for free.

Third, if the software is listed as free-ware on any of the major download listing sites such as:

www.download.com

www.tucows.com

www.sourceforge.net

www.nonags.com

www.freewarefind.com

www.snapfiles.com

are but a few.

Finally, if it is a copy of nearly any major commercial software, (Microsoft, Norton, McAfee, Corel, etc.) and is other than a trial version, it is not free, but stolen.
