publishing ip printers in Actve Directry

By donalconlon ·
We have several hp printers on our lan and we print to them through their ip address rather than a server and share path. How do we publish printers in Active Directory that print over ip. Thanks.

When you are asked SHARE AS use the IP address. I would advice using a name as well. Example:

HP laster Jet 4

Details here:;en-us;Q321837

First connect one of your active directory servers (can be a member server or a domain controller), preferably the one you want to use as print server, to the ip printers you want to share. Once the printer is installed you right-click it then select "share". Now you can give the printer a unique share name and also select the check-box "List in the directory". If there will be different OSes connecting to the printer you can also Install Additional drivers for those OSes here, so that the correct driver will be delivered to the PC once he connects. Once you klick on OK, the printer should be visible in Active. You can now open Active Directory Users and Computers and add more information for those printers, like where they are located etc. That will make it easier for the users to select that printer which is best suited for their purpose.

Dont want to share the printer in the normal way. They connect through a standard tcp/ip port.

I know how publish it on print server but don't want spooled on that print server, just publish on active directory and if possible: publish printer drivers too. Thanks!
