Why can I only connect to my server locally using putty? I have tried to use putty on other machines outside my network, but all that happens is putty closes. Am I missing some settting? I am using MDK 9.1 on the server.

      3 things:

      1) are you using the ‘external’ IP of your machine?

      2) do you have a firewall which is not allowing the correct port? If so.. open the port (23 for telnet 22 for SSH)

      3) Mandrake doesn’t allow telnet by standard, only SSH.

I only ssh, no telnet allowed. There is no firewall. The ssh server is set to accept all connections.

I usually run putty on a floppy from outside my network, but have had my laptop on various times to try to access, but either case putty opens and then just closes

Make sure you have appropriate permissions in your /etc/hosts.allow and /etc/hosts.deny files. If you have ALL:ALL in /etc/hosts.deny and you don’t have an explicit SSH entry in /etc/hosts.allow, that could be your problem.

      Good luck!

Amend that: make sure you have appropriate permissions set for EXTERNAL addresses. Obviously you’re okay as far as your internal access, otherwise you wouldn’t even be able to connect locally.

What is between your ssh server and the external network? I ran into something similar and it turned out that my router wasn’t accepting connections on port 22. Other possibilities include a software firewall on your server, or if you are at work, aproxy server may be blocking outbound traffic on port 22.
