Boot the PC from your XP CD, enter setup and then choose R for Repair. This will allow you to rerun XP Setup and reinstall XP without loosing data. Also Check Microsoft articles 314466, 307545, and 216417. I just had the same problem last week.
i have tried going into the recovery console but it still gives me the stop error. when i try to reinstall i still get the error. does windows xp create boot disk it would really help.
If your pc has a floppy drive, run memory and hard disk drive diagnostics. Both programs are small enough to fit on a floppy. I use memtest86+ for testing ram and I download disk diagnostics from the HDD manufacturers website. Could also be a bad power supply or motherboard.
