Quake II Crashes my system

By Cyber_Scriber ·
Please help! When I try to maximize my Quake II screen my monitor immediately goes black. Nothing works at that point. My only alternative is to toggle the switch on my circuit breaker. Can anyone tell me why this happens and what I can do to maximize my screen?

This sounds like a video driver problem.. Try downloading the latest driver for the video card from the manufacturer. Also check to see what the graphics on your machine are set at.. try reducing the graphics to 800x600 and work up from there..
Good Luck.

I have been able to use Quake II for the past year and a half without any problems until recently for seemingly no reason. The screen is still set for 800x600. I can't get any farther past the setup screen to make any more changes as it just goes black. I'm definitely open to other suggestions. Nice try. Thank you anyway. :-(

Your graphics card or monitor can not handle the resolution or refresh rate, causing the monitor to turn black.

Make sure your graphics card and monitor meets the requirement of Quake II. Also check for the latest BIOS upgrade, and drivers for the monitor and graphics card at

Good luck and have a great day.

Your monitor maybe cannot support the resolution that you have selected in the game. Try to run the game using the basic setting first like software rendering and resolution of 640x480. Try to find out whether your displ;ay card has hardware acceleration or not to support higher resolution and hardware rendering. Most Generic 15" monitor can go up to 1024x768 resolution and the beswt is at 800x600.

Hi, Second reply! Thanks for more information in your rejected reply.

Do you have a graphics card in a slot (PCI, AGP, ISA)? If so your graphics card may have worked its way loose, with the constant cooling and heating of your computer system. Turn off the computer and all equipment connected to it. Open the case, unplug the monitor cable, remove the graphics card, and reseat the graphic card making sure it is seated all the way in the slot, and put the screw back on the bracket.

If that do not help, try using another monitor, to see if the graphics card is working correctly, or if your monitor is going bad.

Good luck and have a great day.
