Question about running a SB network

By nelson ·
I administer a 40+ small business network. I've been "googling" ways in which to efficiently administer my network (i.e. making sure everything is running as smooth and fast as possible.)

Currently, I'm using the following:

Anti Virus: Symantec Corporate Edition AntiVirus v.10 with System Console.

Network Inventory: NEWT Pro(a GREAT program both functionally and price wise)

Network LAN/Internet traffic: SoftPerfect Network Protocol Analyzer.

I'd like to know what else I should be using to administer my network (i.e. do people like GFI Languard for patching system, etc.)

Also, what type of reports do people report on (weekly antirus, spam reports etc.?)

Any advise would be greatly appreciated (and to make sure it's not free, if you happen to be in the SF Bay Area, I'll be happy to buy you a cup of coffee! I hear fedex is murder on overnighting latte's ;-)))

I work for a 50+ node network and use whatevers free, ha. I have a near zero budget.

Antivirus - Symantec Corp 9.0
Traffic monitoring - Ethereal

As far as patch management, I'm using WSUS b/c it's free and I personally like it (especially over SUS).

With regard to reports, I don't produce any reports, other than my own weekly server event logs reporting any errors/warnings.

Other than that I just work at documenting the network using Visio as we're pretty stable here and I'm very **** retentive about my documentation. The guy who was doing the IT work before me is the CFO and there was zero documentation to work off of. It's taken me the whole time I've been here (6 months) to just get up to speed on everything on the LAN.
