question mark over modem

after installing a modem. In the system properties /device manager / modem, I have a question mark over it,what does this mean? and how do I remove it?

it seems there is a problem with the installation. Recheck the installation. Read installation instructions for the modem's driver as well read windows dial up configuration help.

It means that the modem is in conflict with another device or not operating properly
Go to control panel and right click on modems,click on open or properties and then click the diagnostics tab and check to see if the com port in a conflict with another device,most modems use com 2.
Now go back to the control panel,double click the System icon,find the modem in list and click on plus,then right click the modem and click properties,now uninstall the modem and reinstall the modem reboot the system and when prompted let add hardware detect modem,select modem from list and click have disk,insert disk and then follow on screen instructions,then reboot system.
