Question on AGP 8x cards

By opatzg ·
I've seen a number of 8x agp cards coming out on the market. Do they require a motherboard with AGP 8x support or do they down grade to 4x?
I noticed intel does not make an 8x agp slot motherboard yet. So what can you hardware folks tell me about the 8x cards other than don't bother with them? I also read the cards take different voltages is that because the 8x runs a fan and heat sink from the card? I've already looked at Tom's hardware for info and ati.
Thanks

Question on AGP 8x cards

by dmiles In reply to Question on AGP 8x cards

The 8x AGP is backward compatible,it will require that a system power supply be at minimum 350w
The difference is that if you have a board that will 4x interface the card will run at that interface
The performance is not that great over 4x,so their is minimum increase

Question on AGP 8x cards

by dmiles In reply to Question on AGP 8x cards

8V is the voltage requirement of new 8x AGP cards utilizing AGP specification 3.0. Motherboards supporting 8x AGP support both 1.5V AGP 2.0 compliant cards (AGP 4x) and newer .8V AGP 3.0 compliant cards (AGP 8x). The keying for AGP 3.0 cards is identical to that of AGP 2.0 cards to retain backward compatability. A motherboard that supports 8x AGP should work fine with a 1.5V (AGP 4x video card), and a motherboard that supports 1.5V (AGP 4x) video cards should work ok with a .8V video card (AGP 8x), however in the later example the video card would only work at the fastest speed the motherboard supports (AGP 4x).

Question on AGP 8x cards

Thanks for the info! Never new older agp cards could hurt a motherboard before. Pretty much figured any video card would have been backwards compatible with my motherboards.

Question on AGP 8x cards

8X AGP will work on an 8X AGP systemboard. 8X cards will also downgrade and operate fine at 4X systemboard.

Some cards have just a heatsink (MSI), some cards have a fan as well (PNY).

Thanks Anna! Appreciate all you do here. Thanks both of you, was just waiting to see if I would get a few more inputs like motherboards but I guess I'll need to ask that one seperately. Thanks again!
