R in Task Manager causing problems

By dana803 ·
I'm not sure where this came from, but a user's Windows 98 PC is now real slow especially on boot and it seems busy all the time. When going into Task Manager, I see one or two instances of an item called R. Just the capital letter R. Never seen this before. I can't seem to identify anything in startup or installed programs that might be related to this. I end task on it, and the computer behaves ok, but how can I get rid of it permanently? I don't even know what it is...

Interesting Problem

I would think that you can find it by going through the starup entries. It may take a few reboots, but turn off things that you are uncertain of, and reboot until the problem goes away.
I have not heard of the R attack yet, so it may not be spyware or virus, but it might not be a bad idea to scan anyway.

Run some Male Ware Scanners over the system.

You can find several for download here

Download them install them and then update them and then you can run them and hopefully remove any nasties.

Balancing act

It may be cheaper to buy a new XP machine, rather than trying to troublshoot an old 98 machine.
