Radio Comunication

Howdy… i dont know particularly loads about radio, ICT and physics (enough to get by on realy) so i havent been able to find the answer to my question on any websites in a form i can understand : ( Anywho, my question is this… if i were somewhere like at morcombe bay and i wished to communicate with someone by radio that is in sussex what would be the best way to do this? Just as some added info about it, what would the pros and cons of this be compared to phoneing said person?
