RAID addition

By jlbpotter ·
I have a hardware RAID configuration and have three 18 GB hdds configured with data on them. I am wanting to add more storage and add about 3 more 36 GB HDDs in a RAID configuration also. Will I have to initialize my current RAID and lose everything before I can add these other drives? What are my options here?

Since you can't add the 36 GB drives to your current array (without losing half your drive capacity), you really have two (maybe three) choices:
1. If you have a dual channel RAID controller, create a second array with the new drives and move your data to the new array.
2. Backup your data to tape; rebuild the array using the new drives; restore from tape.
3. If you happen to have a spare drive large enough to temporarily hold all your data, move the data to the temp drive; rebuild the array using the new drives; move data back to the array.

Thanks, Tim. I thought so but I just wanted to confirm it.
