RAID in SBS 4.5

By Rayloncorp ·
I have a Server with Win SBS 4.5 running as our PDC, Exchange Server, Proxy Server, and File Server. We also run an Informix database on it but that is going to change soon. It's a 233Mhz with 1BG Ram and only 1 6GB HDD. I want to add a 15GB HDD with Raid 1 setup for redundancy. I would like to add a Raid Controller but to save on costs I plan to attach the new drive to the internal IDE controller. Once the new drive is recognized and the drive letters are assigned I can setup the mirror. Is there anything I'm missing??

RAID 1 is mirroring. If you primary drive is 6gb, then you can only mirror the 6gb onto the 2nd drive. Since you have a 15gb secondary drive, minus the 6gb, you'll have 9gb left over which you can use without rendundancy.
Here are the steps(simplified)
1) Connect the drive as slave to the primary controller.
2) After bootup to NT, run disk administrator so that NT recoqnizes the drive and do the mirror - hold down shift and select both drive, run mirror.
3) After mirror is done after restarting computer, run disk admin again and create the partition for the 9gb drive and format.

Be aware that you're 9gb drive is not mirror, and thus data is not protected.

Great answer. Just one more thing - Partitioning the second drive and offering it up to users may mean you have alot more activity. Hope your performance holds up!
