RAID setup

by jonathan.livni . Updated 19 years, 1 month ago

I bought two hard drives to make a Stripe (RAID0) drive on top of my existing hard drive. I tried all the BIOS options for RAID and all permutations of those options, but always when WinXP SP2 starts loading, the computer restarts. Am I missing something?

Read on for more details:
I bought a Gigabyte 965P DS4 motherboard. Up until now I used one HD and all was well, but now I bought two more hard-drives (exactly same model) and I wish to work with the following configuration:

Drive 1 – SATAII – Un-raided – the HD I used thus far
Drive 2 – SATAII – Raided with Drive 3
Drive 3 – SATAII – Raided with Drive 2
I also have 2 IDE optical drives.

I’ve created 2 RAID0 (stripe) partitions on drive 2+3 using Intel’s Matrix interface. I still wish to run WinXP Pro SP2 from drive 1 which is un-raided. The problem is that WinXP won’t load. The splash screen is shown for a second and then the computer restarts.

I suspect one of two options:
1) The BOIS configuration is wrong
2) WinXP needs a driver

If this is a BIOS configuration issue, how should I configure it? I tried all permutations of the following options, but nothing worked. I’m not sure what they mean too:

– SATA RAID/AHCI Mode
> Disabled
> RAID
> AHCI

– SATA Port0-3 Native Mode
> Disabled
> Enabled

– Onbaord SATA/IDE Device
> Enabled
> Disabled

– Onboard SATA/IDE Ctrl Mode
> IDE
> AHCI
> RAID/IDE

I’m not sure if this is relevant, but after the first unsuccessful boot, windows started asking me if it should load in safe mode. I tried it and it asked me if it should load a d347bus driver. It either gets stuck on that, or after it (but doesn’t show it loads more drivers)

I’ve installed all the drivers that came with the motherboard’s original CD. One of them was a RAID driver.

So, how should I configure the BIOS? What do the different options mean? Why does windows not load?

Thanks 🙂
