    RAM question

I have a MSI MS-6167 motherboard, and I was wondering if I can use the PC133 RAM. In the manual, it says to only use PC100 RAM, but I heard if you use a faster stick of RAM, it will slow it down to whatever your motherboard supports. I could get PC100 RAM, but if I can have a faster stick on hand in case I decide to get a new motherboard, I’d be a lot happier. Thanks for you time.

Well the general understanding is that YES a 133 stick should work in the board but will be limited to 100. Also, generally it is felt that the 133 stick should be the first stick in a multistick install. And of course the manual would not say anything about the 133 because the board is designed to use 100, and maybe they didn’t know about 133 when they wrote the manual.

Now, keep in mind that just because it CAN work, or that is sometimes DOES work, that there is no guarantee that it will work in all cases. RAM can be very touchy, I have had sticks rated the same but from different makers that just would not work together no way no how. Also I have had sticks that work on other boards from same maker that just got fincky in a mixed setup. So, it comes down to giving it a try and buying it from someplace that will work with you, ie take it back or trade it out, if it does not work.

      Hope that helps.

i agree with the first answer the only difference would be that i would look for pc150 or the new one that might be out soon pc170 not that it really matters which one you get as they all do the same job in the end.
