PEBCAK Error....

by buzzwang In reply to Ramblings of a wayward hu ...

I was speaking to a user today who needed a file restored.

I had swapped her old machine for a new one more than a month ago, and she was just now looking for a file that she updates every couple weeks. Said she couldn't find it, and needed it restored from her old machine.

Told her that the old machine was gone, history, tossed out.

She cried.

I asked why she wasn't keeping all of her files on her home drive so that they would get backed up. She didn't know anything about what I was talking about.

looked at her home drive, and found the file straight away. It was exactly where it should be, just with a slightly different file name than she remembered.

PEBCAK Error....

by DC Guy In reply to PEBCAK Error....

Sorry, all my sympathy goes to your customer. I've been in IT for decades yet I did exactly the same thing. Only there was no copy at home and I cursed a lot instead of crying. I was sure I had backup but it turned out that my files weren't being backed up to a network drive after all.

Computer technology has become too complicated, poorly managed, and user-hostile for me. And I'm one of the talented people who qualified for a career in IT and one of the interested people who decided to stick it out and one of the productive people who is still respected and sought out for my wisdom and suggestions. Can you imagine how horrible this stuff is for the other six billion people on this planet?

Be kinder. This computer garbage stuff REALLY sucks.

PEBCAK Error....

by buzzwang In reply to PEBCAK Error....

I call it a pebcak because the home drive is the My Documents folder.

She is a user in our Citrix environment. All files are saved to H: or My Documents (both end up in the same place on the server, and it all gets backed up behind the scenes). Her problem was that since it didn't have the name she thought it should, then that wasn't the file. Even though the file had existed for more than a year, and Shadow Copy says she has been making 4 or 5 changes to it each month.

Pebcak.

Where's my printer?

by buzzwang In reply to Ramblings of a wayward hu ...

I got a call from a user a few minutes ago. He was wondering why that, when logged into our Citrix environment from home, he wasn't getting anything he printed.

I asked what kind of printer he had, he said it was an HP LaserJet 8000. After double-checking all the environment settings for his account, he said it still wasn't printing.

I asked if the printer was USB or parallel. He said it was networked. I started going through the process of walking him through checking the connection and setup and driver and stuff on his home machine (which according to policy is more than I'm required to do) and found that he had no printer installed.

We downloaded the driver, installed it and tried to print a test page. He said it failed to print (WinXP). I asked him to check on the printer, make sure it was on and that it was Ready. He said he would when he was back in the office next week.

I asked again about the printer, this time including a question about it's location. It was in the office, outside his office door. He was at home and just printed a few hundred pages of stuff to it over the course of the day. What he couldn't understand is why the prints didn't come to his desk at home.

Told him to buy a printer or call a courier. He decided on the printer.
