Ran XP repair - now won't boot! HELP?

By wdpetryga ·
My son's PC was dying a horrible death with explorer chewing up 100% every time any of us would log in. After various fix attempts I followed the suggestion to run a repair install of XP. Now the PC won't go much past the logo XP logo screen - it'll just keep on rebooting, and so on, and so on ... same in safe mode.
The odd time I would see a flash of an error box - something related to Insufficient Virtual Memory ... using a borrowed System Works 2007 I renamed the pagefile on the C - it has been recreated successfully, but the problem continues. I Even tried a repair again!

Time to stop repairing

backup and format. Unfortunatley repairing works maybe 65% of the time. the rest require a full format

Time to rebuild, many fewer headaches that way.

XP SP2??

by wdpetryga In reply to Time to stop repairing

I used an original XP Home disk (since mine is a pre-loaded system with a recovery disk only) to do the repair. Maybe getting an XP Home SP2 original disk might help - I was running SP2 before the repair install. Any thoughts? I only have an XP-Pro SP2 disk and my installation is a licenced XP Home - so I doubt I can use that disk.

recovery console

Hi,did you try with recovery console?
you can use it from xp setup.when it asks you to try to repair using recovery console select yes.once inside try to use fixboot and fixmbr tools. Before those try to run chkdsk /p /r(or chkddsk /? for help on usage)
and i would agree that repairing existing installation is not working well most of the time.

Repair console woes

by wdpetryga In reply to recovery console

I tried the repair console first - but the Administrator password is in an invalid format, from what I understand, because this is an OEM pre-loaded PC. I know the password, but the system will not accept it - I even changed the password when I was still able to access safe mode (b4 the repair install), and culd not get it to work. Any ideas there?

There may be a chance...

It's possible that the requested password belongs to the XP disc, NOT the installed system.

If this is the case you should give a response of "BLANK" for the password. By that I mean when you have to input the password just hit the Enter key, leaving the password blank.

It might just work.
