Random dial-up network dialing

By techrep ·
There seems to be no reason for this PC to dial up to the internet, but it tries at what seems to be random. I have made sure ICS is NOT enabled, i have REMOVED family logon and VPN and have told W98SE NOT to use dialup networking to connect to drives. I have installed Zone Alarm and it does not report anything accessing the internet. This question has been posted but not resolved in microsoft.public.win98.gen_discussion, so I know i'm not the only one with the problem.

Anyone?

You have something there makeing a call to the winsock, and honestly..it could be anything network (or in your case probobly internet) related that wants to download some sort of content. Examples could be ICQ, the critical update manager, channel subscriptions. norton update or a news ticker.

I would probobly just go into the internet properties of IE, sense that's probobly controlling the auto-dial, and go to the connection tab and set the radio button for never dial a connection

Although this wil disable autodialing, it should force some sort of winsock error from the offending application and you can reconfigure the application from

Good luck to you

neon120 gets credit for this one, because as it turns out, it was indeed a trojan of sorts. It isn't prettypark, but another one that renames notepad and then does it's dirty work through IE. Sorry i can't hink of the exact name of the virus right now, but that's what it was. thanks all for your help.

I have seen that happen on numerous computers because of a virus called PrettyPark. It's simple to remove, just have to change something in the registry. You can read about it here: http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/prettypark.worm.html
