Random Freezes & Black Screens After Power Outage – PSU or GPU?

Hey everyone, I’m having a recurring issue with my PC that started shortly after a power outage about a month ago. Since then, the system randomly freezes for 2–3 seconds and then recovers. Occasionally, the screen goes black briefly and then comes back. It never throws a BSOD or restarts on its own. Interestingly, this happens more often when the system is near idle or just browsing the web—less so during gaming sessions, but it’s still present.

I’ve updated my graphics drivers, but that didn’t solve the issue. Based on the timing and symptoms, I suspect the power outage may have damaged either the PSU or GPU.

Has anyone dealt with something similar, or could this possibly be linked to a deeper issue with the motherboard or power delivery? I’m trying to avoid unnecessary parts swapping.

I would suggest getting the computer to a repair shop for a bench check if you cannot find or correct the problem. Potentially it could be something as drastic as bad/damaged motherboard. Some things aren’t simple to diagnose and in some cases could cascade to multiple bad/damaged components. You have to start from the ground and work your way up the chain of components in cases like this. I wish it was a simple answer fits all, but it isn’t. I agree that the CPU and/or the PSU could be the primary cause of the issue.

Add the HDD to the list.

The symptom does not tell you what it is this time.

I usually inventory the PC before we power it up and look for signs such as clogged heatsinks, dead fans and more.

A power cut might corrupt what’s on the HDD and cause this too.

Talk to techs. They will tell you it’s never the same cause.
