Random PC Lock Up

Locked

When we installed a virus protection program(Sophos) on all our companies PC’s and some were locking up when a shut down was performed. We did find that the file name MSGSRV32.EXE was causing this problem and someone had suggested that we uninstallthe screen savers to solve the problem. I was hoping someone out there might have a website or information they could share with me.

Try disabling scan floppies on shutdown- I’ve seen this as an issue with a few anti-virus programs.

If the systems are hanging (assuming nt 4.0) with a grey screen- check to see if the screen saver is set to none and with the password protection enabled (if it is: change it to something else other than blank)
What happens with this, is that the machine thinks it is locked, yet it can’t due to no screensaver. The grey-out only happens when you use the windows menu to logoff (try ctrl-alt-delete)

I have experienced exactly the same problem on a client’s site. The problem was related to the Anti-virus software installed. After disabling the software the clients ran correctly. A later version was purchase and installed and no fault was evident. The old software was F-Prot 4.03 we then upgraded to 4.05. It was to do with ‘real time virus scanning’. Hope this is of some help.
