Random Rebooting

By bobmack27 ·
I'm debugging a machine that is currently running an AMD K6 400mhz processor, 256k ram, 8m video card, sound blaster sound, ...., and win98. THe problem is that this machine randomly re-boots and then performs scandisk before being usable again(major downtime). The only thing that seems consistant is video intensive games, Winamp, and most audio cd software titles will cause the reboot every time. I guess I'm looking for some way(diagnotic tool, trick, or just plain ol' magic) that will helpme debug this a little better before I resort to replacing cards one at a time. All comments and suggestions are welcomed.

Random Rebooting

Random reboots are usually caused by overheating. First check the fan on the CPU, then check the power supply fan. Is the box very hot when you open it, even with both fans running? You might need an additional cooling source in the box.

I struggled with this problem for two years without getting any answers that worked. So I have to ask if the system is a brand name machine or something "homemade"? If it is "homemade" then after checking the power supply to see if it is bad or checking all the drivers for everything then you must try the weird solutions! What I did was line the inside of the case, only where the expansion slot holes are, with aluminum foil! This provides better ground than the case itself does. The foil runs along the slot holes and under neath the motherboard and touches at least one screw. If the machine is a brand name machine this is probably not the answer because they usually have some sort of lining in them already. Hope this helps.
