Random reboots?

By mikelans ·
System: Soyo SY-K7 VEMPRO motherboard, AMD Athlon 1700+, 512 Mb SDRAM, 30GB Western Digital HDD and 16X DVD-ROM on primary IDE. Windows 98 SE, IE 5.5 Service Pack 2.

Problem: After installing and configuring the system, during DVD playback thesystem reboots itself for no readily apparent reason, at different places in the movie. Also happened after completion of IE5.5 download. Shut down and rechecked all connections, still doing it. I know this sounds like a rookie problem, but this one actually has me stumped. Anything I haven't thought of to remedy this, short of trashing the system, would be appreciated.

Switch the DVD to the second ide controller and set to master,
Did you change the jumper configuration before installing to master and slave.
Try this and see if it helps

Try reseating your processor and memory.
Also make sure you have the latest drivers for your DVD player .

How long is system runnign before this happens?
Do you have any other peripherals running when this happens? It may be as simple as a power overload as well, check your power supply. If it doesn't happen to be any of those, you may have a systemboard issue, even though it is intermittent.

Hope these things help.

You may want to check the memory Voltage used buy your video Card and make sure your mother board is set at the same voltage level. if the mother board setting are different it can cause issues like auto-reboot

This sound definately like a power supply, cpu overheat or memory problem.

DV

The AMD processor is like a microwave along with the WD HDD. My first check would be temperature. Most new mb's have a CPU temperature exceed rating. When it approaches the range a reboot/shutdown may occur.

This will also happen if your memory overheats.

Check your cooling fans on the CPU and also, make sure that you have your cables away from the fans/cpu/memory/and power supply openings. With what you are running, you need a minimal of a 400 watt power supply.

Downloads:

Downloads are memory hogs. A bad memory stick will cause a reboot.

Hope this helps.

Paul.
