Random records from Excel

By brannuml ·
I have an Excel 2000 spreadsheet with about 3,500 records. It only has two fields; Name and e-mail address. I need to pull a random sampling (10%) of these records. I would like to take this 10% and either put it in new columns or on a seperate worksheet. I tried the Data Analysis tool "Sampling" but as far as I can figure it only works on numeric fields. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated!

Try this.

A,B,C,D,E,F
Number,Name,Email,Rand,lookupName,LookupEmail
_____________________
Number your records.
Copy the formula =RANDBETWEEN(1,3500) down 35 cells in column D.
Use Vlookup something like for lookupName:
=VLOOKUP(D3,A2:C3500,2,FALSE)
and
=VLOOKUP(D3,A2:C3500,3,FALSE)
for lookupEmail
The selection will change everytime you use th F9 refresh key.
