RANT - Blocked Websites

By Bizzo ·
Trying to look at Dumphrey's "A little light humor on Monday" post http://techrepublic.com.com/5208-6230-0.html?forumID=102&threadID=265938&start=0 and it's yet another site that's been blocked here at work, "Adult Content".

Don't worry, I'm not going to ask how to get around it.

They've been slowly tightening the restrictions over the past few months.

Originally it started with the usual, games sites, facebook, etc, not bothered about those.
Then streaming media and adverts are being blocked, a little perturbed about that one as it includes a lot of the bbc news website and almost all webcast/podcast sites, even the adverts on TR are blocked, leaving just white space.

Now photobucket and imageshack are blocked, which means most peoples avatars are blank. So TR is mostly white space, except for the text. I would take a screen dump to show you, but I have nowhere to host it!

Tried to download some sysinternals stuff yesterday, guess what? Blocked, because it allows you to download software. This was before I remembered that the sysinternals stuff is now on Microsoft. I've found recently that most of the sites I used to go to to download sharewares are blocked.

I do tend to download a fair amount of shareware tools and visit forums because of the work I do. I found that last week I had to download some stuff at home as it was all blocked.

I wonder what's going to be blocked next.

End of my rant.
Now it's your turn.

Have you asked to have it unblocked?

by CharlieSpencer In reply to RANT - Blocked Websites

When we get a 'Blocked' message, we e-mail the person responsible for the blocking software and ask to have the site unblocked. If the blocked site is actually work related, he'll unblock it. If it isn't work related but isn't clearly a policy violation, he forwards the request to HR and they make the call.

Have you asked to have some of these sites unblocked? What do you lose by asking?

It may be that "Adult Content" is the only explanation the software is programmed to offer as the reason it blocked the site.

And we all know how easy it is for filters

to see problems where one does not exist.

we tried site filtering years ago. builders3xchange.com got blocked because of the unfortunate blending of the two words made the word s3x.

yeah, using a 3 now so the filter doesn't block you out of this discussion too! B-)

Once

by Bizzo In reply to Have you asked to have it ...

I asked for the bbc news site to be unblocked a while ago. They said that there was no business reason to watch news videos in work time, fair enough.

They won't unblock any file download / freeware sites due to the security risk, and risks of viruses, OK.

From an admin/security point of view, I see their point completely. It's just a bit of a pain sometimes, and I haven't had a rant for a while!!

I was just wondering if any other companies have similar restrictions as this one.

We block the 'Beeb' by default

along with most other sites that stream content. While they are rarely work related, for us the bigger issue is the bandwidth they use at the expense of business related traffic.

by default, and then give access to those sites with a proven business purpose. And yes, TR zips right through without the ads. I had no idea exactly how many ads TR had until I looked at it from home.

It can be frustrating sometimes (and I'm involved with enforcing it), but if there is a true business reason, you can get it unblocked.

When something of value to the company

by jdclyde In reply to RANT - Blocked Websites

gets caught in the filters, if you notify the admins, I am sure they would put in some exceptions for you?

Man, I WISH adverts were blocked. Bet you just fly through the site?

If you want, you could email me the screen capture and I would post it for you. B-)

Question for you, has their been a change in the IT management recently?

Not that I'm aware of, but then again, as with most major companies, they're always "restructuring".

Blocked for me as well

by GSG In reply to RANT - Blocked Websites

Photobucket is blocked as a spyware site, and any links that are tinyurl come up with a spyware warning and are blocked. A lot of times, I miss the whole point unless I go home and view everything to catch up.
