Rant of the Week – Taxes (05/28/08)

by Tammy.Cavadias . Updated 18 years ago

It’s that time of the week again. You all get to hear me rant, whine, stomp my little foot and generally just give my feable opinion (which we all know is small at that).

This week – its taxes. No matter where you live I’m sure we can all agree when it comes to taxes in one form or another we pay too much. I’ve never heard someone say – hey you tax me too little – tax me some more! But, I could be wrong (wouldn’t be the first time, and won’t be the last). 🙂

However, on that same note, I’m sure some of us wouldn’t mind a tax increase if there was a benefit to our quality of lives – whether that be in the form of better roadways, better healthcare, better services (i.e. fire, police), etc… And as long as said proposed tax increase actually goes toward what it’s suppose to go toward and doesn’t wind up as just another form for the government or what have you to siphon extra money, leaving nothing for what it was propsed to go toward.

Course in the above case, it’s a matter of how to do such that it doesn’t harm those who are already struggling in this world, which in return causes its own set of different problems.

Now like most there are certain taxes that drive me nuts. So much so I just want to scream (so plug your ears, I can scream rather loudly)

As mentioned in last week’s rant (we managed to get ourselves side-tracked and onto the subject of taxes) – Service taxes, FCC taxes, income taxes, sales tax, inhertience tax, personal property taxes, school taxes, view taxes (for those who have a nice view or not so nice view of something that city thinks is a view even if you have to strain your neck out the window and peer between the two houses blocking your view to catch a sorta glimpse of the so called view – this tends to be a New York favorite) taxes on shipping, and everything else inbetween. Oh and of course my favorite – being taxed for receiving a refund for having paid too much tax to begin with – thats considered income (what?!). If it can be taxed it more likely is in one form or another.

So here’s my rant on ones that drive me nuts…

What’s up with them FCC taxes anyway? Why do I have to pay it? Then to top it off when they add this tax/fee/surcharge (and we all know fees/surcharges at least in my opinion is just a fancy way of saying “TAXES” or what ever you want to call it to my monthly bill – I’m hit with an extra tax since I’m taxed on the total combined.

Service taxes… why do I have to pay taxes for a service? I go to have a nice dinner, and I’m hit with a tax. I go to have my hair cut, I’m taxed again, I pay taxes on my water bill, my electric bill, my cable bill. Why??? Oh and lets not forget the tax some companies charge if you buy something online – you get hit with a shipping tax – what?! Why? Why are you taking me on the shipping cost? (yeah, I know pick companies that give free shipping)

Why did I have to claim my refund I received for paying too much State tax as Federal income so they could tax me on it?? If I had paid too little and owed the State taxes, the federal government (its a U.S. thing) wouldn’t be allowing me to “deduct” the extra I had to pay.

But enough of all that… it gives me one big ole headache and my little foot is tired of me stomping it. :p

So tell me, what taxes drive you nuts? Which ones do you see as being unfair (and yes, I know some would probably see them all as being unfair)

Should some taxes be lowered or eliminated all together? Maybe lower some but raise others? and if so which ones and how can it be done in a way that doesn’t do more harm than good.

And lastly, if you raise the taxes on some things where would you like to see that money go?

-Tammy 🙂
