It all depends on what you need.
You can comunicate 2 win98 with modems and using the hyperterminal.exe program. It will allows you to send and receive files from one computer (the host), but not for example login to the other PC, in order to browse a share or use a printer. In order to do something like this you will to setup a RAS server (NT only). Ras will act as if you were in the same LAN.

Good luck

Answer one is wrong there is a program in win98 that is called dial up server that does just what you want (its not going to work for VPN server just for modem dial ups).
If you cant find it in your start menu then you should add it from the control panel.

You will also have to setup networking, Add a service give your computer a coumputer name, Add the protocol you want to use, and add the client you want to use, and share the files, then you can use the network icon on your desktop to access the files.
You will have to setup the above (networking part) on both computers the one that is connecting and the one that is acting as the server.

Follow these steps :
1 - Check Network Properties to sure "Dialup adapter" and "Client for Microsoft Networking" have been installed.
2 - Check "File and print sharing " Enabled.
3 - Goto : Control panel->add/remove program->windows setup
4 - add Communication -> Dialup Server
5 - goto : My computer -> Dialup Networking -> Connection -> Dialup Server
6 - enter username and password.
7 - after enabling dialup server you can connect from client via modem and with those username and password. (in client : Mycomputer -> dialup networking )

good luck

Sure it's possible to configure a 98 machine to recieve a phone call from another computer.

A software called PC Anywhere is perfect for that. In addition, it's both inexpensive and easy to install.
