RAS

By milesrrs ·
Hi Again
I have a W2k server configured with RAS to enable dial in access, when i dial from a win98 machine (probably all machines) the first thing i get is a pop up box that asks me for a username, password and domain name.
If the info provided is not correct, it hangs up...fine
But if i provid the admin username and the password and the Netbios domain name, then i am connected and can ping the server from the 98 machine.
If i go START...RUN \\SERVER or \\SERVER\SHARE, up pops another boxasking for a password, i have tried the admin password, and using no password, but it just refuses to connectme to the share....

Can anyone give me any idea why i cannot connect to the share.....and more improtantly how i can fix it

Thanks

RAS

The first password box is validating you to RAS. Once you validate, RAS puts you on the network (assuming the "this machine only" option was not selected). The RAS service may not be properly giving you a domain identity.

Try setting up your remote computer with the identical username and password you use in the office. (This will be one which would let you attach a share if you were locally on the network.) The reason for this is that when you try to attach a share, your login credentials from your 98 box are transmitted (suitably encrypted). If the username/password combination does not match a valid one for the share, you get the password box. If you get the password box, try a valid username/password (remember passwords are case-sensitive) and put the domain name of the server in ALL CAPS.

Good luck.
