RAS problem...

By ajdelo ·
I recently installed an Aztech AZT 4029 modem onto an empty COM port (4) on my PDC and I confirmed that it was set up correctly with Hyperterminal. I then installed RAS successfully (it is running and "Waiting for Call". However, when the server boots up, I get the following error in Event Viewer:

EVENT I 7024
SOURCE: Service Control Manager
DESC: The Messenger Service terminated with server-specific error 2270.

It is my understanding that:
EVENT ID 7024 = The requested operation cannot be completed because the terminal connection is currently busy processing a connect, disconnect, reset, or delete operation.

ERROR 2270 = The computer name could not be added as a message alias. The name may already exist on the network.

I checked RAS and it is running. I checked WINS and noticed that all queries received have failed (although Event Viewer says it's initialized and working correctly).

I tested RAS and was able to connect, however, the server did freeze up after about 5 minutes while trying to get into an Access database.

Has this affected WINS or NetBIOS somehow? I do have a secondary WINS server and it is working correctly and it looks like it may be doing all of the resolution now!?

RAS problem...

This problem is caused by two computers on the network having the same name, or a computer having the same name as a user. Rename the offending computer (or user) and things should right themselves. You can find the offending computer by using thenbtstat utility from a command prompt. Some useful switches are -c (local names cache) and -r (resolved names) - any duplicates will be listed with type as 'conflict.'

RAS problem...

No, that's not it. I only have 10 workstations in my network and I know all of the usernames and NetBIOS names. I didn't have the problem before I installed RAS and when I uninstall it, the problem goes away. Only when RAS is installed do I get the error. I also apply service pack 6a after I install RAS so I know that's not the problem.
