re-entering the work force after several years?

by penguinsrule . Updated 17 years, 5 months ago

Greetings!
I have a BS in Physics/Math (1983) an MS in Computer Science (1989) and 15 years of OpenVMS Systems Administration experience (which is now essentially obsolete) and I was laid off my job in August 2002. After I was laid off I went to school and earned a Masters Certificate in Project Management and I passed the PMP exam. Following this my wife became critically ill and then I experienced a trauma injury and then I was on disability after that. So, I’ve been working at rehab since that time and I began working part time jobs in March 2008 and I’ve been applying for various jobs since then, and I’ve also been working with trying to market myself as an artist but so far this has not been very fruitful but I’m starting to get some recognition locally. So far my efforts to secure full time work have not gone very well – I have been working with DVR (Department of Vocational Rehabilitation) and so far I’ve had 4 interviews and all the interviewers questioned my ability to work and I’ve continued to work at improving myself. How much do I need to give them in the way of details about what happened to me? I’m trying to make progress in getting re-employed again and I would appreciate any thoughts you may have. Thanks so much.
