Need XP, NOT Recovery CD

by TheChas In reply to Re install windows XP sav ...

Did your PC come with an actual XP CD?
Or, a recovery CD or disk?

A recovery CD returns your computer to the state it was in when you first bought it. None of your data files will be saved.

If you have an actual XP CD and product key, you can reinstall XP and save your data files.

This will NOT however, save installed programs. You will have to reinstall most if not all application programs.

Next, if you do not understand any of the instructions, you would be better off to take your PC in for repair rather than attempting to fix it yourself.

Boot up from the XP CD.

Follow the prompts to install XP.

Do NOT format the hard drive.

Choose to install XP to the same folder as the existing installation.

Install Windows updates, and your anti-virus software.

You may need to manually install some hardware device drivers.

You may also need to move your files and import your mail and address book even if you set up the same user name.

Restore with XP without changing other settings

by gandree In reply to Re install windows XP sav ...

Yes you can re-install XP without having to re-install all your other programs. It has worked for me several times on different machines.

First either have the install CD available or have it copied completely and onto your drive in a sub folder C:\I386 At a Run prompt, type in where ever this file is located ex. C:\I386\winnt32.exe /unattend

Let it run. Your programs and settings should all stay the same.

Enjoy!
