re-install XP

By baratono ·
after replacing a faulty motherboard (new one has a differant intel chipset than the old one ), I re-formatted the HD and did a clean install of XP PRO. The system prompted me to "activate" windows....when clicking on the active icon, the system responds that "Windows is already activated"...yet upon re-boot, I keep getting prompted to "activate windows". How do I corerect this ?

Since you've already activated windows and it keeps asking you to activate it. Everytime you reinstall windows it will ask you to reactivate once. If you have not done so with this new install you must do it again. If it failed I would contact M$ to activate it or go to run and type oobe/msoobe /a hit enter and then attemp to do the activation again.

I've heard that if you change 1/2 hardware items microsoft requires you to buy another license but I have no idea if that is correct.

Since the hardware has changed, you will need to activate Windows XP manually over the phone, run the Activate Windows Wizard, select manual method and ring the phone number given. Its pretty straight forward.
