Re-installing nt 4.0, the best way ?

By The Learner ·
What is the best way to re-install NT 4.0 and keep all settings for WINS, DNS and DHCP.

Will just re-installing over an existing copy work ??

1000 points for the best answer.

Re-installing nt 4.0, the best way ?

by msgtray In reply to Re-installing nt 4.0, the ...

Repairing or reinstalling NT always makes my stomach turn a little, even though I've done it countless times. The more critical the data I am trying to save, the more TUMS I need. Here is a suggestion to help your heartburn.

Before you attempt any repair or reinstallation, copy your drive with a utility like Norton's Ghost. This will make whatever procedure you follow, less catastrophic should the results turn out to be "Less than desirable"

The simple answer to your question is to reinstall NT into the same directory as the previous installation. NT install will ask if you want to upgrade or install a fresh copy, select upgrade. Cross your fingers and check your settings when you're done.

If your situation is that you have a busted NT system, and you don't know the previous settings, it may get a little sticky. If upgrading does not retain the settings that you need AND you can't reliably recreate them, you need to take a different tack. Start over (hence the Ghost copy). Install a fresh NT system in a different directory. Use the new NT to view the registry hive of the old installation (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE). Hopefully this will not be necessary, but if it is I (and others) can provide you with the exact keys to capture data from the old install.

Good luck... Ray
