read cd's only if present at boot

By jw1023 ·
Hi Folks, hope someone can point me in the right direction.
I am working on a clients pc that has a strange problem, it will only read a cd if it is in the drive when the pc is booted, if the cd is then removed th systems will continue to show it's contents in the drive and will error when a file is clicked, the same is true for removable memory sticks (in a usb memory card reader). I have tried a bios update and run all the available windows updates the systems is a P4 2Ghz 512 ddr 266 on an abit IT7 mainboard, cdrw is on secondary ide controller, as master, hdd's are raid 1 on an onboard highpoint ata raid controller.
I believe it is a software/os problem as the same thing occurs with an external usb memory reader and an external firewire dvdrw.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I suspect an antivirus program (Norton, McAfee and so on) is the cause.

Boot to Safe Mode. If there was no problem of reading files from CD-ROM or any removable media, you found the answer.
Uninstall and reinstall the antivirus program.

Thanks for the reply wcp, I found that the problem was actually an early version of ahead in cd broken the ata drivers and had then been uninstalled as it didnt work, a reinstall of incd fixed the problem.
