Read only attribute over XP network

By ozi Eagle ·
I have 2 computers running XP pro SP2, peer to peer network. One computer has just been upgraded (hardware) to P4 and programs preloaded, data copied across.
All OK on that machine, but other machine can no longer access files on first machine with full rights, ie files read only.
Sharing options all setup OK, can't see anything in permissions, but then maybe I wouldn't recognise it if it bit me.

Anyhelp appreciated.

TIA

Make sure all users who need access are setup on all PCs. To test if things work also turn off the microsoft firewall which was installed with servicepack 2. If you have a thirdparty firewall, keep the microsoft firewall turned off and use the thirdparty one. Also check for updates of your thirdparty firewall, particularly for its ability to function with sp2.

Thanks. Tried to do this, but at one point update asked for Office CD, which, typically, couldn't be found!!!!

Remember that the default share permissions are to allow everyone only read-only access. You have to change the share permissions if you want to allow full access. On the sharing tab of the folder that you are sharing, click on the permissions button. Then change as required.

Hope this helps :-)

one can do the office updates WITHOUT the original installation cd if one downloads the administrative update. it is a whopper. you can also order it for free from microsoft.com
good luck

I haven't been back to try this. No more complaints from client. Maybe they learned to live with it.
