Read Only Folders in XP

By northwood ·
Why is evey WIN XP folder I create a Read Only folder. You can't shut off read only. After I uncheck READ ONLY and APPLY it, the READ only attribute is set back on again when I exit the folder.

How do I shut of READ ONLY and keep it off?

A built-in feature with Windows XP. The folders aren't truly read only.

Ol' BFilm was sorta correct. If what you are seeing is a green square in the Read Only check box, that is XP default and does not set attributes to Read Only. A green check mark in the box will set Read Only.

Several months ago, someone posted a question here regarding how to remove the "green square" and no one had a solution. So, I assume it's safe to conclude that it is a "feature" that you have to live with.

As best I recall, the green square has to do with inheriting permissions in a directory tree.
