Real Major Problems???

By JGetson ·
I have a co-worker whose hom computer is acting bizzare. Numerous illegal page faults, VXD errors etc. can't stay up and running for more than 5 minutes till it locks up and/or shuts down. Any help would be appreciated

Simplest answer? Reload the computer. It's a whole lot quicker than trying to track down each error.

Otherwise, jot down the .vxd's that are causing the problem. These are device drivers. The name of the vxd's should steer you toward the device that's causing the problem.

Once you figure out which device is trouble-some, download the latest drivers from the manufacturer's website and re-install it. If it continues to have problems, reload your system. Still have errors after that? The device may be bad.

The computer operating system seems to have become very unstable and instead of trying to trouble shoot each device error,I would reload the operating system and update all hardware drivers

This could be a sign of a defective memory stick. If possible exchange the ram with known good ram, or if multiple sticks are installed, remove them one at a time, see if you can identify the bad one.

I go with Answer 3, reloading the OS sometime
do not help, unless you are going for a clean
install. Doing this would mean that you have
to reformat the harddisk, all the data on it
would be gone as well. Check the RAMs and see
if that solves your problem before
reinstalling the OS.

Random and intermittent lockups can also be caused by a power supply that is slowly dying. Have a technician check it.
