Real Player & Shockwave problem

By shawn ·
I've recently integrated a brade new system for my wife. Everything works beautiful, except that when she uses Real Player 8 Basic to view video either streaming or off a CD (for an on-line course she's taking) Real Player will freeze up and stop playing. This has also occurred when playing animations viewed through Shockwave.
Quicktime 5 & Windows Media Player seem to be working great.
I have removed the video driver and codecs, and then reinstalled. I have brought all drivers up to date, and insured that Win2K is fully updated.
I'm not sure what the problem is now, and was hoping someone here could help me out.

The system consists of:
AOpen AX4BS motherboard Intel 845 Chipset
512 MB SDRAM (2x256)
Intel P4-1.5 GHz. CPU
ATI All-In-Wonder Radeon 32MB DDR
Sound Blaster Audigy Platinum
3Com WinModem
3Com NIC
Sony DVD-ROM & HP 8100 series CD-RW
Windows 2000 Pro
Internet Explorer 5.5 SP1 (Downgraded from IE 6 at request of the tech support from on-line class)

Thanks for your time,
S. Harris

There are a couple of things to try.

1. Go into Display Properties and set the Video Hardware Acceleration to None, restart the system, and try RealPlayer and Shockwave again.

2. If you have the ability to hook up two monitors to your system, it may be that those two programs are displaying the video on the other display adapter.

3. My mom had a similar problem to yours on her system. I installed the latest RealPlayer 8 from a new download from real.com and her RealPlayer still failed to operate. The new install did not replace the previously installed version of RealPlayer, so I uninstalled both of them, rebooted, and reinstalled the latest RealPlayer 8. It then worked fine.

4. I discovered that RealPlayer would not work on my system until I gave the user account Administrative rights.

5. Turn off Active Desktop and test again. Active Desktop often interferes with apps and causes strange behavior.

6. Logon to another user account and test again. If this works, the original user account may have a corrupted registry.
