Disclaimer: I don’t follow college football at all. My exposure is limited to what’s unavoidable in the mass media.
That said, I define ‘unavoidable’ as including a front page lead story with photo, and appx. two full columns inside. Apparently the local (Univ. South Carolina) coach (Steve Spurrier) is apologizing for not voting for a U. of Florida quarterback to a pre-season all-star team. Spurrier says one of his assistants completed the poll. The assistant says he felt the all-star team already has enough players from Florida so he picked someone else. Spurrier’s vote was the only one who did not select the Florida QB. Spurrier has requested the conference change his vote to the Florida QB, making the player’s selection unanimous.
Why does selecting another player require an apology to both the school and the QB that everyone else picked? If the conference wants unanimous choices, why does it bother to poll the coaches? Is this strictly a local issue, or did it receive coverage in other Southeastern Conference cities?
