Realtek AC97 removed from default options list

by ww1ace2006 . Updated 19 years ago

Two days ago, after re-installing [updating] XP home, I installed Diskeeper 2007 on my system and ran both the disk defrag and then the Boot Defrag. Following these operations my sound stopped working.

The first thing I checked was my volume but couldn’t open it “No active mixer devices” error. Searched forums and followed all options outlined to resolve this issue …. still nothing.

When I access my “Sounds and Audio Devices” through the control program there are several problems I noticed. On the “Volume” there is ‘No Audio Device’. On the “Audio” and “Voice” tabs the default device is listed as ‘Modem #0 Line Playback’ AND it is the only item listed as a default. Prior to this I used the following as default ‘Realtek AC’97 for VIA Audio’. This is no longer available as an option.

However on the “Hardware” tab, it is listed (along with quite a few others) and alll are showing as working properly.

Again, following much more searching of forums and following numerous options outlined I downloaded and installed the latest drivers for Realtek AC’97 (see below). I also downloaded, installed and ran “K-Lite Codec Pak” (suggested as a cure on one of the forums). Also as a result of a suggestion on a forum I re-installed the VIA drivers from the install disk. All to no avail.

In desperation I once again re-installed [upgraded] win XP home. This time at the end of the install I received an error message (which disappeared before I could make a selection, or fully copy the info) relating to an error on MS00BE.EXE which said something about audio & video and needing a file ff….and options to skip once, always, use once, use always. Before I cud select an option windows restarted and install ended.

Here are the Audio and Sound devices on my system from System Info:

Name Unimodem Full-Duplex Audio Device
Manufacturer Microsoft

Name Realtek AC’97 Audio for VIA (R) Audio Controller
Manufacturer Realtek

I still have NO sound. In WinAmp Config of Direct Sound it cannot get device info as it is in use.

I really do not want to have to wipe my disk and reinstall because of the number of applications I would have to re-install.

Any help would greatly be appreciated before I seriously consider going back to my ink bottle and quill … NOT

With thanks
