It took Microsoft until SP4 for Win2k to fix the multitasking problem. If you tried to run multiple tasks on a Win2k system – all versions, it had a tendency to lock up. 3 years to fix an OS being touted for its superior multitasking capabilities to Win98!
Let me rephrase that: it wasn’t a tendency, it did lock up, period.
I ran into this little treasure when I started replacing some Win98 systems which were running 4+ processes. The multitasking algorithm in Win98 was no gem itself but at least it worked. I applied SP4 when it came out and the problem disappeared but not before I had to move functions back to the more reliable Win98 systems.
Looking back at Reason #7, I wonder if this is what killed the RAMdrive in Win2k and WinXP. For this to run correctly your multitasking has to be spot on and taking out a function was a lot easier than fixing it.
