What would cause a PC to reboot itself while its just sitting there running and no programs open? If you walk away for a while and come back the computer has rebooted itself.

Pentium 200,128 megs ram,Win 98

Could be CPU overheating. Check the power supply fan and the CPU fan. Try running it without the case on and see if it still happens.

Three reasons why the PC reboots itself,

1. Power surge, or sudden fluctuation in power supply.
REMEDY: Check your PC power supply.

2. Win98 auto-suspend utility, which has a lot of unwanted troubles.
REMEDY: Goto Control Panel, System settings, and change Type of Computer from Desktop PC to Always ON.

3. Virus.
REMEDY: Get a good virus scanner. Or just plain format your system and start with a clean, tweaked machine.

Best of Luck. Mathew.

In addition to the four causes listed in repsonses 1 & 2, a bad memory module can also cause a machine to reboot. It acts very much like a CPU overheating.

If the other options don't assit you, go into your BIOS and disable all the Power mangement functions of your system. Is the system reboting or turning itself OFF, if it is disabling itself and it isn't the power management it could well be you CPU preventing itself from overheating. Sometimes the sensor on the CPU can be stuffed and you may need to get a replacement or disable the monitoring of CPU temperature in the BIOS.

One other thing would be a power sag. Some power supplies will shut down when the voltage gets to low and reboot when good power resumes. I have seen sags reset the bios in computers. UPS backups now range from $90.00 to $130.00 depending on yourrequirements.
