reboot loop

By G... ·
Hi again!

After solving the last problem (PC won't start), I still got one...
Now the computer goes through POST then a black screen and restarts.
I checked BIOS and it detects CPU, memory and hard disks correctly but not the DVD.
I try to boot without the DVD connected and still the same.
I don't find the menu to try a safe mode start (F8 doesn't work most of the tiime. When it works it takes me to another menu).
There is Win2k3 on the booting disc from another PC (worked fine).
MB: ASUS A8R-MVP
2 GB minne
Graphic: ATI all in wonder.

I check with the supplier and there's no known issues with the graphic card and the MB

Any suggestion?

New MB and old HD means reinstallation (in-place upgrade or repair installation) of Windows.

Need to take care of DVD problem first. I assume the DVD-Rom is OK and so are IDE cable and power plug. It may be due to front side USB connector being installed incorrectly (backward) or faulty USB cable. I have seen it causes the Secondary IDE Channel disabled. Unplug the cable and see if it resolves the problem.

I though about the IDE and power problems so I switched them with the hard disk ones and it worked (I mean I had the sane problem) so I guess they're alright. I also think it may be the secondary IDE Channel and it looks like it but it's not the USB nor Firewire because I didn't plug them in.

But thanks a lot.

Your new mother board may not support your old hard drive or devices. Disconnect all your drives and reboot. IF it boots ok then you need to update your BIOS so it can see other devices, if after the update it still will not see the devices. Clear the Bios and set it to default. And reboot.

How can I upgrade BIOS without CD or starting the machine?

when I don't have HD plugged in it goes to "put a bootable disc in" or something like that.
I also tried to enforce that there was a CD on the secondary IDE and then I get a not ATAPI error?

After much testing I found out that it's just the second IDE that is not working. I tried the most and I think it's just a hardware failure on the MB.
I put one cd with the HD on the primary and it's working fine.

Thanks a lot to all of you
