Rebooting to the "c" prompt from Wins XP

How do I get to the main c prompt to erase the hard drive? Using windows xp operating system

Win XP does not have a "DOS" mode that you can boot into. You will need to boot from an XP CD or the Windows XP Setup Disk (single disk) available at link below.

Alternatively you can use the utility below to wipe the disk out completely if you are trying to remove data to make a clean disk.

First off you can't erase the os you are using.

Boot to a dos disk with fdisk on it and erase all partitions, dos, extended and non dos.

Now recreate a new partition. Reboot to the floppy and you can format the drive only as fat32.

If you are planning to reinstall xp you can boot to the xp disk and at some point during the install you will have the option to reformat the current partition. Usually xp wants to use ntfs.
