Rebuild laptop

By askg55 ·
I purchased a thinkpad T43 off eBay. It has Windows 2000 installed. Windows starts and a login is required. I tried changing bios to start from the CD drive and installed my windows XP (legal) disc. But no matter what I do it keeps starting with windows 2000 asking for the userid/pwd. How can I get passed this in order to erase harddrive and install Windows XP?

You need to do a full format

The quick format leaves data behind.
Or your XP install really didn't.

You can check by booting to the XP CD first R for recovery console.
There should be two entries to choose from;
Windows 2000
Windows XP Home
If they are both there you can enter the XP install and run this command;

Bootcfg /rebuild

That will rebuild the boot.ini file and then should allow you 30 seconds to determine which to boot into.

first check

that the BIOS has changed to start from a cd first.

otherwise, I recall on my old IBM (can not remember model of it) it had the option of you press a key during boot, then you could choose where to boot from (boot manager?)
