receiving .doc files as .dat

By latinorepublic ·
A user sends out email (using Outlook 2000) with an MS Word2000 .doc file attachment. Most recipients receive this attachment as it should be, that is as .doc. The problem I'm facing is that some of his recipients receive the file as .dat file... The only possible common thread is that some of the recipients use Eudora mail. But knowing that hasn't given us a clue on how to fix this problem.

Do you use an e-mail virus scanner? Many virus detectors will scan a file then rename it to .dat if suspected to be a virus. It is also very common for viruses to use the .dat extension, I'd suspect the old word macro virus may be on one of the machines. Either way I'd do some virus scanning.
Hope that helps.

Thanks. I used your answer to explain the user what could be causing the problem. He accepted it. He ended creating a new doc., no problems after that.

I am having the same problem. Do they have IE 6 Beta installed? I noticed this problem after upgrading IE to the beta version so I just suspected it was a bug from the beta version.

We are using an enterprise version of Norton AV. Your answer makes a lot of sense. Will follow up with the user and see if we can narrow this down.

Comment to Al Yakus....
No, they don't have IE6 beta on their systems. You may be right in bringing this up, 'cause when a user upgraded to Netscape 6.0, it made many changes related to file extensions. My company "requires" Netscape 4.72. IE is removed from the desktop. Not very many users in my company would know to get IE6.
