Recommend a good ASP program?

By pacificblue ·
Greetings,

Can anyone recommend a good ASP (Active Server Pages) program? I'm new to this arena, and would like to utilize an easy to use program. I would like to use the abilities of ASP's for an online store someday. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated!

By a good "ASP program" I'm assuming that you mean an ASP editor or development environment. I am a professional ASP developer and I use Microsoft Visual Interdev which has a lot of design time controls that simplify ASP programming through a drag-n-drop interface. It does a lot of the "programming" for you. I don't personally use the DTC's because I prefer the flexibility of doing my own development. If you want to LEARN to program ASP as opposed to drag-n-drop, you might try another productthat I use, NetObjects ScriptBuilder (http://www.netobjects.com) or one that I'm evaluating, Allaire Homesite (http://www.Allaire.com). Both of these products are available in downloadable evaluation editions. Web sites that you will need as an ASP programmer include msdn.microsoft.com, www.ASPToday.com, www.15seconds.com, and www.devx.com which are all sites frequented by all levels of programmers from novice to expert. You will also need a web server that supports Active Server Pages. I usea hosting firm that

[continued] I use a hosting firm that gives me an NT virtual server running IIS. I also use MS Personal Web Server (PWS) on my development workstation for some development and testing. Also, you can get a lot of valuable experience by working through the exercises in a book like "Professional Active Server Pages 3.0" by Alex Homer, Wrox Press, Oct 99.

Best of Luck

I am using HomeSite as the program for programming. I find it's quite easy to use, maybe it's because I am used to it but when I first started using it, it didn't give me much of a problem. The only problem I had is the syntax. I found the site www.devguru.com to be very useful as it is a online manual to me. You can search for any function and be shown the syntax, parameters required, etc. I runs IIS on the server. I had PWS installed but I never use it.
Hope this answer your question.

Just a comment about Allaire's Homesite: I user Homesite exclusively for all my web development (including ASP) and have found that using the available add-ons make life MUCH simpler. Check out the ASP4HS site at http://www.wilk4.com/asp4hs/ for some awesome add-ons!!

If you don't want to go the Interdev route and are looking for an ASP-specific editor, check out ASPExpress. I've tested it out and its really nice...

If you're looking for freeware, check out Erik Banker's EasyASP - http://mason.gmu.edu/~ebanker/easyasp/ - it is easy to use, fairly full-featured and, well, its free :)
