record searches

Greetings! I have worked extensively with the OpenVMS operating system, and I use my PC exclusively now. VMS has some really neat utilitys - called the sort/merge - search etc where it can search all the files for a particular record and then place only the wanted records in a n output file (that is the search) and the sort/merge is an incredible utility that appears to have no PC equivalent - if anyone is familiar with what I'm talking about and knows how to rig a PC to do what VMS does, please let me know. THanks Rick

You can do a similar thing with PC commands such as DIR, FIND, SORT
e.g.
DIR *.txt|FIND "London"|SORT >Result.txt

Which will search all txt files for text 'London', sort it and output to a result file.

For more power try unix commands:
